The New York Yankees were the first team to begin regularly wearing uniform numbers. A tradition dating back to 1929.
This website attempts to make it easy to find who wore what
numbers in what year. It's not 100% complete, so if
there's any information you can help us with, please feel

| Yankee Classic Rating (1 low to 10 high):
6 |
This game may not gain in stature as a classic, but it should gain notoriety as a rarity. That of course being one of the rare occasions where Alex Rodriguez got a big hit as a Yankee. To refresh your memory, the score was tied at 6 going into the ninth inning in Fenway. Schilling came in to pitch for the Red Sox. He recently returned from the DL and was acting as the closer.
Gary Sheffield led off with a booming double off the Green Monster and Alex Rodriguez followed with a home run to center to give the Yankees an 8-6 lead. Mariano Rivera came on in the bottom of the ninth and struck out Johnny Damon, Edgar Renteria and David Ortiz to close out the win.
The Yankees were creamed 17-1 the next day and everyone was predicting doom and gloom. However, they bounced back to take the next two games by 7-4 and 5-3 tallies, thereby winning 3 of the 4 games in the weekend series.
But take note, someday when the Yankees are trying to boost Alex Rodriguez' ego, they'll cart this one out to remind him of the player they thought they were getting. Maybe in return, should the situation arise, Alex can use this tape at an arbitration hearing. Lord knows he won't be breaking any postseason tapes out for that one. |
