I haven't had time to delve too deeply into the details or make my usual commentary, so until I do I'll just refresh your memory. The Yankees trailed 9-0 in the second and 10-1 in the third inning against Texas at Yankee Stadium. Shaun Chacon was awful and was knocked out after only and inning and a third in what was really the beginning of the end of his Yankee career.
The Yanks began to chip away slowly at the Ranger lead, scoring two in the bottom of the third to "cut" it to 10-3. The key was that the Yankees were able to hold Texas scoreless from the fourth to sixth innings. The Yankees tacked on two more in the fifth on a Jorge Posada sac fly and an Robinson Cano ground out.
The comeback was seemingly completed in the bottom of the sixth as the Yanks put a 6-spot on the board, taking an 11-10 lead. This came courtesy of a Derek Jeter 3-run shot, a Bernie Williams RBI double and a two-run single from Miguel Cairo.
Scott Proctor entered the game in the top of the seventh and promptly walked leadoff hitter Kevin Mench and then surrendered a two-run homer to Brad Wilkerson. Thereby nullifying the comeback and the lead.
The Yankees would not be beaten yet, especially against Texas' suspect bullpen. Johnny Damon reached on a Mark Teixeira error and later came around to score on a Jorge Posada sac fly to tie the game at 12.
Mariano Rivera entered the game and allowed Texas to rally for a run off a Kevin Mench single, Brad Wilkerson sac bunt, a Mark DeRosa walk and a Rod Barajas RBI double. Robinson Cano made a neat play at second with the infield in to prevent further damage, but the Yankees still trailed 13-12.
Texas closer Akinori Otsuka came in to close out the game, but Johnny Damon singled to lead off the inning. Unfortunately, Jeter and Alex Rodriguez both made out leaving Jorge Posada as the lone Yankee hope. Tonight Posada came through, blasting a two-run, two out walk-off home run to right field. |
