The New York Yankees were the first team to begin regularly wearing uniform numbers. A tradition dating back to 1929. Other teams before 1929 tried putting numbers on their uniforms, but mostly on an experimental only basis, usually not lasting longer than a season or sometimes even past a few games.  The Yankees were the first to implement uniform numbers and maintain the practice indefinitely.

This website attempts to make it easy to find who wore what numbers in what year since they began wearing numbers in 1929.  It's not 100% complete, so if there's any information you can help with, please feel free to contact me to fill in the blanks.

The Texas Rangers have acquired right-hander Edwar Ramirez from the New York Yankees for cash. Ramirez was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Feb. 28 to make room for Chan Ho Park. In 20 relief appearances for the Yankees last season, Ramirez had 22 strikeouts in 22 innings. He was 5-1 with a 3.55 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 55 1-3 innings for New York in 2008, when his 10.3 strikeouts per nine...

Hal Steinbrenner says the New York Yankees won't alter their policy against contract extensions and will deal with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Joe Girardi after the season. "Everybody does business in a different way," the team's managing general partner said Tuesday following a news conference to announce details of the first Pinstripe Bowl at new Yankee Stadium, "I...
Alex Rodriguez 'at ease' with Canadian doctor (AP)
Tue, 09 Mar 2010 10:38:15 PST

New York Yankees Alex Rodriguez(notes) looks at his bat before taking batting practice during baseball spring training at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., Monday, March 1, 2010. Federal agents reportedly questioned Rodriguez in connection with a Canadian doctor they are investigating who provided an unapproved substance to baseball players.

Yankees star Alex Rodriguez said Tuesday he is at ease with his ties to a Canadian sports doctor embroiled in cross-border investigations involving HGH and another drug, though he still hasn't talked to federal authorities about the case. Speaking a day after Dr. Anthony Galea told The Associated Press he treated Rodriguez last year and prescribed anti-inflammatories but never gave him or any...

APNewsBreak: Canadian doctor says HGH was for him (AP)
Tue, 09 Mar 2010 06:17:30 PST
A sports doctor at the center of drug investigations in Canada and the United States said Monday he treated Alex Rodriguez after the Yankees slugger had hip surgery last year and prescribed anti-inflammatories but not human growth hormone. Dr. Anthony Galea also told The Associated Press an assistant who was stopped at the U.S.-Canadian border in Buffalo, N.Y., last year was carrying only a...
Yankees Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Mon, 08 Mar 2010 15:33:33 PST

The Yankees again enjoyed a day away from the ballpark as part of manager Joe Girardi's new tradition, and it was a hit with newcomers and veterans who enjoyed last season's pool hall tournament.

The trip's value was seen almost immediately as the club was hit with the first twinge of potential distraction that often requires as much stress-free bonding as possible.

While the team was enjoying its trip to an arcade, Alex Rodriguez was again watching his name hit the headlines in connection to a story involving performance-enhancing drugs.

This year's story so far is not about Rodriguez or his use of PEDs, which he acknowledged last season, and so the fallout is expected to be much smaller.

Yankees' Vazquez closes first start with flourish (AP)

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard(notes) bumps fists with teammates before the start of the Phillies 7-5 loss to the New York Yankees in their spring training baseball game at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., Monday, March 8, 2010. Howard ended his 0-9 start with a a single.

Javier Vazquez's first pitch was all too familiar to Yankees fans: a home run. After that, the right-hander provided a glimpse of what the Yankees are hoping to get from him in his return to New York: a consistent starter who will take some of the pressure off the rest of the rotation. Much to the delight of Philadelphia's vocal fans -- and some mocking Yankees supporters -- Jimmy Rollins...

Aceves tossed four perfect innings Monday in a 6-0 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates in a split squad game for both teams. In two outings this spring, both against the Pirates, the right-hander has retired all 18 batters he's faced.

Baker's strong outing and Nick Blackburn's new contract was tempered by closer Joe Nathan returning to Minnesota for tests on his surgically repaired right elbow.
